Sublingua Writing Retreat Award
ENTRY:

Starting in 2023 Inverted Syntax Sublingua Prize for Poetry awards a cash prize of $500, a writing retreat award, and publication in our print issue for exceptionally crafted, previously unpublished poem(s) by an emerging writer who has not yet published a full-length manuscript nor a chapbook exceeding 44 pages. There is no cash prize awarded to the runner-up, however, we also award a writing retreat award to the runner-up.
Sublingua Submission Guidelines

ABOUT THE SUBLINGUA WRITING RETREAT AWARD:
The Sublingua Writing Retreat Award is a week-long, self-guided writing retreat in the small ski town of Leadville, Colorado staying at an historic Victorian home in walking distance to downtown Leadville. Only two scholarships are awarded through the Sublingua Poetry Prize submission: One is to the winner of the prize and the other is to the runner-up.

One winner and one runner-up are selected from the Sublingua Prize for Poetry submissions.
Announcements are made in late September and the writing retreat must be taken in the following year.
  • Recipients of this award may invite up to four members of their writing community to join them.
  • The award covers all accommodation costs at the Victorian home, absorbed by Inverted Syntax Press LLC.
  • While there is no cost to recipients, Inverted Syntax is funded out of our submission fees and book sales (which do not cover our operating costs) so we hope you will consider donating to cover cleaning costs and/or towards the scholarship fund for the retreat. We will accept donations via Inverted’s Venmo to help with the cleaning cost ($175) of the space. Please email Nawal at editor.invertedsyntax@gmail.com to see how you can help offset this cost through a donation. Any amount is welcome and donating is not a condition of receiving the award and you may choose not to donate.
  • The home has four bedrooms. Three bedrooms on the 2nd floor and one on the main floor adjacent to the kitchen. All four bedrooms have queen beds, and the three bedrooms on the 2nd floor also have bunkbeds (so there are plenty of beds). With four bedrooms, plenty of beds, and only five guests permitted to stay, plan your sleeping arrangements amongst yourselves accordingly.
  • Remember, you are on your own: This is a self-guided writing retreat. You are being offered space for peace and focus to help you on your writing journey.
  • This is not a communal space. No one, but you and your guests will be staying at the house.
  • The award cannot be exchanged for goods nor can it be transferred to a different recipient.
  • The 2023 Sublingua Writing Retreat Award must be used between March 1, 2024 and July 24, 2024 or between October 1- November 10. The deadline to accept the award is no later than December 1, 2023. (Some dates are not available. Please submit your dates to us as soon as you receive the award).
  • Recipients are responsible for their own travel arrangements, as well as their own meals.

ABOUT THE SUBLINGUA WRITING RETREAT SPACE:
Built in 1888 during Leadville’s historic Silver Boom days, the Sublingua Writing Retreat Award
was an inn prior to being purchased by the Kehoe family and with whose permission we are able to offer this retreat award. The Sublingua Writing Retreat space (also known as the Doc & Ruth Kehoe House) is conveniently located in the heart of downtown Leadville, and in walking distance to all coffee shops and pubs.

Step back in time into Victorian grandeur as you experience original 19th century woodworking craftsmanship, original oak paneling, maple wood floors, stained glass windows, high ceilings, and an elaborate oak staircase. At 3500 sq/ft (basement not included) this spacious, lavishly furnished Victorian home with mountain views, boasts four bedrooms, a formal living room,  a formal dining room, a large family room, (600 sq ft), and two bathrooms. With new floors in bedrooms, kitchen, backroom, and bathrooms,  as well as a fully-equipped eat-in kitchen, wifi accessibility, this writing space offers all the luxuries of modern living with the feeling of Leadville’s gilded era.
We hope the accommodations and the surrounding area of Leadville inspire and invigorate your writing

Recreation opportunities: Leadville is 10,000 feet above sea level so be prepared: be very well hydrated a week before, and allow your body to adjust to the high altitude by easing into activities. When ready, there is lots to do that is sure to inspire you: Hiking, fishing, snowshoeing, skiing or enjoying Leadville’s historic landmarks. The retreat space is just fifteen minutes by car to affordable skiing at Ski Cooper , hiking rails , Turquoise  Lake and Twin Lakes

A few rules:
  • No pets allowed
  • No smoking allowed
  • No loud parties
  • At least 1/3 people staying at the house must be 25 years or older. ID required.
  • A detailed agreement is sent out after you accept your award. The agreement outlines for you how to care for the house and must be signed and returned electronically.
  • We ask that you do not check in earlier than 4PM MT and check out by 10 AM MT

What happens next:
You'll receive an agreement to sign once you accept your award.
A week before you arrive, you'll receive a document to help you get the most out of the house, how to check in & out and things to do in Leadville. You will also receive the house address and access key code to enter the house
