   About the cover art

Picture“Façade”, 20’’x 24’’, Acrylic on canvas, 2010
Issue one’s  online cover is a painting submitted by artist Sophia Nicolosi. “Façade” was a 2010 undergrad assignment where Nicolosi was required to incorporate material from two locations: the Menil Collection in Houston and the grocery chain, Fiesta. She says of the artwork, “Here were two distinct worlds, the hallowed halls of reverence to great artists of the world and a busy market of culturally diverse foods. I used the grounds of the Menil Collection as the setting and not-too subtly worked in the palate of the vibrant Fiesta Mart. The hybridity of Façade is more than it seems at first glance, as is often the case when the truth is concealed.”

Sophia Nicolosi was born and raised in Houston and has been drawing, painting, and creating her whole life. In 2011, she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from the University of Houston. She is always challenging herself to grow her style and use of acrylics. She is currently working with abstracting floral elements in landscapes. She still lives in Houston with her husband, Austin and their spoiled guinea pig, Piglet. She is  currently pursuing a side job in dentistry.
